Dave's Story

David Bertz is one of those very lucky human beings who has found a way to make a living by combining his passions for travel, for beautiful objects, and for doing business. He describes himself as "the only cigar smoking Buddha salesman in Humboldt County."

Humboldt County, home to Dave for over 25 years, is tucked in the redwoods of Northern California. Over the years Dave has been an antique dealer, a landscape gardener, and, let's face it, a junk man. His eye for collecting prepared him well for the bounty that is Bali, an island he first visited in 2000. At that time, Dave was in the middle of a five year period of rambling around the world. The spirit of the people and the place stayed with him, and in 2003, with the onset of a full blown mid-life crisis, he decided to fulfill his wish to return to this enchanting place. He began a small import business that has grown steadily until he now finds himself supplying outlets up and down the West Coast and points East.

Dave's gregarious nature and sense of humor and adventure have enabled him to connect with many Balinese craftspeople and small businesses. Each trip to Bali is full of new discoveries as well as old connection.
